Saving Stoke - Levelling Up

…Shelton, Longton and Hanley!

In 2021, The Stoke-on-Trent City Council was able to secure some of the Government’s Levelling Up fund – a fund that was distributed to different regions within the United Kingdom, meant to increase the quality of local infrastructure; create jobs; renew local towns etc. Ultimately, it was supposed to reduce the economic imbalances between areas and social groups across the UK.

The Goods Yard

The Goods Yard is a construction project on Glebe Street, close to the Stoke-on-Trent Railway Station that started around June 2022. Headed by Capital & Centric and supported by the Levelling Up fund, it has seen tremendous progress over the years and is in fact scheduled to open early 2025!

The Goods Yard is planned to have housing, independent bars, eateries, workspaces, shops, cafes and even a green eco-friendly space for socialising and open air dining.

All-in-all, a very promising project and a testament to the use of the fund for its intended purpose in revitalising cities such as Stoke!

Etruscan Square

With over seven acres of land to work with, Etruscan Square is one of the bigger projects the Levelling Up fund is looking to be put towards in Stoke! As of right now, it is a residential-led development, and the city council is still drawing up plans and ideas on how best it can be used for the benefit of the community.

Plans so far have seen around 300 homes with considerations of leisure facilities and surrounding entertainment, which have been coming along at a decent rate. Though, the city council want to keep this open – just in case this plan needs revisiting or a better, more suitable one comes along.

Sites important to Stoke’s History

Famously known as The Potteries, there are many factory buildings and sites important to Stoke’s history due to their contribution to its pottery and ceramics boom during the industrial revolution.

With there being no further use for these factories, they have since been closed down and left to idle.
Therefore, the city council has planned to repurpose both the Spode Pottery Works Site & the Crown Works Factory into different housing and residential areas using the Levelling Up fund.

In addition, the former Tunstall Library & Baths building is also looking to be restored and repurposed into housing, however the library itself has been moved into the refurbished Tunstall Town Hall.
